Email Marketing 101: What is it? Why it’s Important to Your Business.

  1. Simplicity is Key. Too many times emails contain a lot of images or text. The best emails that people can receive have a few images, and every word fights for its place in the email. Emails need to get the point across to readers in the most efficient manner. Constant Contact says that emails with 20 lines of text, or about 200 words, have the highest click-through rate. Within that word count, a headline, body, and call to action should always be included.

  2. Be Mobile Friendly. 68% of email campaigns sent are opened on mobile devices, such as a smartphone. If you are or will be using an email marketing service, such as MailChimp or Constant Contact, your emails will already be optimized for mobile. If you are designing them yourselves, make sure that the email opens and is readable on a mobile device. Try sending a test email to yourself and viewing from mobile and desktop devices.

  3. Don’t be afraid to ask. Ask customers to join your email list. It doesn’t have to be hard, a simple sheet of paper at a market booth or a “call to action” button on Facebook can help. Sharing a monthly e-news on your Facebook page or sharing the link to sign up for your email list in a post can also help grow your list. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.
